Quiz and Pasta Night – Sunday 29th January 2012
Hi Everyone
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Social Secretary of the Club. I’ve been a member of Westside for nearly 7 years, playing for teams and attending social tennis most weekends.
We're going to kick-start the year with a Quiz & Pasta Night on Sunday 29th January. Please let Mark know or sign up at the bar if you'd like to come - it's always a popular night so sign up soon – tickets are only £10! We'll have a maximum of 6 people per team so bring along friends and you can make up your own team, otherwise we can fit you into a team on the night.
I will be trying to organise an event for the last weekend of each month so bear that in mind when you book up your diaries! Keep your eyes peeled for a Wine Tasting evening at the end of February!
Many thanks in advance and I look forward to arranging a fun-filled events calendar for the coming year!

American Tournament - Tennis boot camps - Box League
Hi everyone
It may only be January, but we have lots of events and activities planned for the next few months (we will be sending out the social calendar for the full year shortly).
1. Cardio Tennis – every Tuesday starting 24th January and Tennis Boot Camps – every Thursday starting 26th January
If you want to get fit for the year ahead, then these sessions are for you!
Cardio tennis is a high energy fitness activity that combines the best features of the sport of tennis with a full body, calorie-burning cardiovascular aerobic workout. It’s a social and fun class (sometimes with music), for players of all abilities.
Tennis Boot Camps use circuit training to combine a full cardiovascular workout with tennis-based strength training, and again players of all abilities are welcome.
Each session will last for one hour from 1930 to 2030, and then if you are still standing, you can stay on and join in some social tennis! The cost for each session will be £2 (pay on the night), please give your names in at the bar, or telephone or email the club as soon as possible to book your place. Full details can be found on the main club notice board, please note that this is now the new one on the right hand side just inside the front door opposite the bag storage shelves.
(NB There is also a cardio tennis session at 1100 on Thursday mornings, cost for this £5)
2. Box Leagues
As a number of people have expressed interest in playing in a Singles Box league, we are aiming to run one from February onwards. Players of all standards are welcome to enter, and will be grouped into “boxes” of 4 to 6.
You then play the other players in the box, and at the end of each month, the top two players will move up a box and the bottom two players will go down a box. Again, you can find full details on the main notice board, please let us know by Sunday22nd January if you would like to enter!
3. American Tournament - Saturday 11th February
The first American Tournament of the year is scheduled for Saturday 11th February, starting at 1400 sharp. We will again be using the popular timed format, which means you will play about 6 rounds of 15 minutes each, and the more games you can win in this time, the better your chances of winning the tournament. This of course means you need to play as fast as possible, and run when changing ends, which will increase your fitness even more!
The tournament is open to players of all standards (including stronger Juniors), entry is £6 to cover prizes and balls, and includes a free drink and light snacks afterwards. Friends are of course also welcome to enter the tournament, and no visitor’s fees will be charged. We can only take a maximum of 48 players, so get your names in ASAP!
Finally, there have been a few instances lately of members forgetting to pay for the use of their floodlights. Could you please ensure that you check in at the bar when you are coming to play in the evenings, and remember to pay before you leave the club!
Regards
Mark

I will send out another mail to let you know exactly when they are available, and all other relevant information including the deadline for entries.
3. Wimbledon Ticket Ballot
Information on how to apply for the ballot will be available late April/early May. Details will be on our website and on the club notice board, and will also be emailed out to members. The draw will probably take place around 15th May. NB Please note that to be eligible to enter, we must have received your subscriptions by Sunday 8th May and you must have British Tennis membership.
4. Discount at Sports Shops
As you know, we do not send out membership cards. However, as membership entitles you to a discount of 10% at the following shops (this does not normally apply to racquets), should you wish to purchase goods from these stores a letter confirming your membership is available on request from the club at any time:
- Village Sports, Worple Road, Raynes Park.
- PWP Sports Base, 258 Wimbledon Park Road, Southfields. (The discount does not apply to tennis racquets)
- Fit Co, 42 Wimbledon Hill Rd, Wimbledon.
5. Club Rules
All members and their guests are requested to ensure that the club rules are understood and followed, particularly rule 1 concerning dress code, as there have been a number of occasions over the last year where either members and/or their guests have arrived in inappropriate attire. A copy of the rules is posted on the notice board at the club, and spare copies are available at the bar.
6. Junior Classic – next Week from 11th to 16th April
The annual Junior Classic tournament will be running the whole of next week, starting on Monday 11th April with the Finals on the morning of Saturday 16th April. We will be keeping 6 courts free for members until 1130 each morning, thereafter 3 courts for the remainder of the day, so please be patient if you need to wait for a court during this period.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you another enjoyable year’s tennis at Westside!
Kind regards
Mark

- Summer Surrey Postal Competition (Singles and Doubles)
The entry forms for the Summer Surrey postal competitions are now pinned to the notice board (can this be a harbinger of Spring?!). Entries close on 6th March, so please write your names up for the appropriate events you wish to enter ASAP. If you won't be visiting the Club between now and then, please let me know or ring Keith Harrison on 020 8949 4828. Finals are on Sunday 24th July.
Improve your Tennis Skills with Floating Coaches on Saturday or Sunday Afternoons!
For the next 3 months, on alternate Saturday and Sunday afternoons one of our coaches will be attending social tennis from 1400 to 1600. We will be mixing them into normal social sets with 3 other players, and the idea is that while playing, they will be able to offer tips on doubles play. Plus of course it will make the sets more fun! This free service for members will start this Saturday 19th February
- Playing on Weekday Afternoons
If you arrive and want to play on a weekday afternoon, you might find at times that all the courts are being used for coaching. If this is the case, please speak to Alison, Chris or Marek and they will arrange a court for you.
- Westside Players in World Tennis Tournament in New Zealand
Good luck to Alison Taylor and Simon Bramwell who head off to New Zealand this week to play in the World Team Tennis Championships, starting on Monday, 21st February. Simon, the Westside Men’s Open singles champion in 2009, has been chosen for the Great Britain Over-35 men's squad which will be competing for the Italia Cup at Wilding Park in Christchurch.
Westside head coach Alison will be playing for Canada at the same venue in the women's Over-45 Margaret Court Cup competition. Toronto-born Alison was chosen to captain the Canadian team after returning home to win the national title in Vancouver last summer. She will then stay on to play in the individual championships the following week. (In her absence, Chris Foster will be running the coaching department.)

- Free Wednesday night floodlit tennis for 20 to 30 somethings.
Westside LTC at Wimbledon have launched a drive to attract the lost generation of tennis players back to the game.
The club is offering 20 and 30-somethings FREE Wednesday night floodlit tennis until the end of April.
Peter Tullo, chairman of Westside's playing committee, said: "We are aiming at young people who have played tennis and are looking to start again after studying or beginning their careers.
"It's a chance to play tennis with other young people in a social setting at one of London's best clubs.
"All they have to do is register their interest with the manager and turn up with their rackets and kit. We'll provide the courts, the floodlights and the balls. If they enjoy it there will be the opportunity to become members."
The club have made a short video to promote the initiative which can be found on Westside Facebook and Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94YCc1NxivI).
Any interested in joining in on Wednesday nights should contact Westside manager Mark Steele on 0208 947 4987 or email: manager@westsideltc.org.uk.
