Westside Championships Finals Day 2011

Westside Champion Marek Karas

Olivia Fery and Marek Karas retained their singles titles at Westside LTC's finals day on Saturday, September 17. Fery was crowned ladies champion for the fourth successive year after beating Edita Raca 6-1, 6-0 in a repeat of last year's final. Marek, the Westside assistant manager and a former Slovakian junior number one, overcame Simon Bramwell 6-3, 6-4 in the men's final in another re-run from 2010.

"Marathon man" Bramwell, who represented Great Britain at last year's earthquake-hit over-35 world championships in New Zealand, played three finals in succession and won the next two.
He beat Iain Fraser 6-3, 6-4 in the men's over-35 singles before partnering James Silvester to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Marek Karas and Richard Mayers in the men's doubles as they avenged last year's final defeat.

Fraser and Andy Truscott won the men's over-35 doubles, beating Austin Coventry and Graeme Alston 6-1, 6-0. Mark Page retained his over-45 singles title, beating Clive Ashworth 7-5, 6-0 and Frank Robinson won the over-55s, defeating last year's winner Mark Steele 7-5, 6-1.
Sisters Alex and Caroline Joy won the ladies open doubles for the third successive year, beating Kim Roberts and Katy Shaw 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in a hard-fought final.

Alex Joy completed a hat-trick of successes by partnering Austin to victory in two mixed doubles finals. The defending champions retained their open title with a 6-1, 6-3 success over Iain Fraser and Kim Roberts and the over-35s with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Peter Kosmider and Mary-Ann Hubbard. Henry Brooks won the men's singles plate, Elisabeth and Connor Bingham took the Parent and Child under-18s, with Simon and Theo Kemp winning the under-14s.

Double success for Westside juniors

Congratulations to the Westside 10 and under boys and the 16 and under girls who both finished as champions in their AEGON Surrey League divisions.

It was the first time the boys had played league tennis and they won all their four matches in convincing fashion, beating Roehampton 10-2, Surbiton 8-4, David Lloyd Raynes Park 8-4 and Elstead 12-0.

Max Trapnell, Marco Laporta and Joe Young played in all four victories, Jorge Beltraro took part in three and Deji Thomas-Smith stepped in for one.

The Westside girls topped their league with three wins from three matches.

The squad, consisting of Sophie Moss, sisters Katherine and Polly Nash, Katie Lampi, Tilly Burles, Amelia Beltrao and Alexia Perez-Rosell, overcame Foxhills 10-2, Wentworth 10-2 and St Georges Hill 12-0.

5 June

Westside ladies completed their season in the AEGON National League with a 12-0 home victory over Hampden Park. But their fourth win from five matches was not enough to take them to the top of the South East South Division as leaders Wilton maintained their push for promotion to the top division with a 12-0 win over Wimbledon.

The teams are level on points but Wilton still have one match to play and have a better games difference. Alison Taylor retained her 100 per cent singles record from her four appearances this season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Dani Allistone. Laura Peterzan beat Jenny Hughes 6-1, 6-2, Kim Roberts defeated Kate Bloomfield 6-2, 6-3 with the pairing of Claire and Kim beating Allistone and Hughes 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles. Westside were handed walkovers in one singles and one doubles as the visitors arrived with only three players.

Westside men's hopes of promotion to the top tier from South East South were dashed when they lost 8-4 at home to Roehampton. Marek Karas secured Westside's only singles success from four rubbers, beating former Westside junior Nik Snapes 6-3, 6-3 and then paired up with Rob Blythe to win their doubles as he side suffered their second defeat in six matches. The men complete their AEGON fixtures with a tough visit to Sutton on Sunday (June 12)

22 May

WESTSIDE men's first team made it four wins from five matches in the AEGON National League with a superb 8-4 away win over St George's Hill.

Marek Karas and Simon Bramwell both won their singles to keep the team on level terms before Westside dominated the doubles with Marek partnering Simon to victory while team captain Gary Thomson and David McCall, drafted into the side for his first match of the season, also won.

The victory takes Westside into third place in South East South Divison - the second tier of the country's top inter-club competition - putting them firmly in contention to push for promotion to the premier division.

With two matches to go, Westside are currently level on points with leaders Park Langley, who they beat on the opening day of the season, and second-placed Paddington - the only team to have beaten them. Both are narrowly ahead of Westside on games difference. Results (Westside names first) - Singles: Marek Karas bt Andrew Kennaugh 6-0, 6-2; Simon Bramwell beat Chris Clark 6-1, 6-4; Gary Thomson lost to Graeme Hood 4-6, 2-6; David McCall lost to Elliot Mould 5-7, 1-6. Doubles: Karas and Bramwell bt Clark and Hood 6-4, 7-6; Thomson and McCall bt Kennaugh and James Mott 7-5, 6-2.

The ladies were left without a match because West Worthing, who were due to visit Westside, have withdrawn from the league. Both teams have a weekend off before resuming their AEGON campaigns with a home double header on Sunday, June 5, when the men play Roehampton and the ladies entertain Hampden Park.

15 May

Westside men won a tense deciding shoot-out to clinch a 7-6 victory over Esporta Brighton in the AEGON National League - after the ladies beat the Cumberland Club 8-4 in the first match of the home double header on Sunday May 15.

Both sides bounced back from defeats the previous week to secure their third victories from four outings this season in the South East South Divison - the second tier of the country's top inter-club competition.

The men’s match went right to the wire before Marek Karas and Richard Mayers took the doubles 10-8 in a nailbiting shoot-out to clinch victory after the singles, doubles and singles deciders were all shared.

Team captain Gary Thomson, playing on painkillers after having a dislocated shoulder put back at courtside during a match in Glasgow 48 hours earlier, won his singles shoot-out 12-10, beating Esporta’s Keelan Oakley for the second time in the match.

Earlier the four singles had been shared, with Thomson and Mayers winning for Westside and the two doubles also finished level with Westside’s win coming from the pairing of Thomson and James Silvester.

Laura Peterzan, Olivia Fery and Alison Taylor won their singles for Westside ladies with Olivia and Alexandra Joy taking their doubles to move the team up to second place in the table.

Westside LTC got off to a flying start with the men's and ladies' first teams chalking up a double success on the opening day of the new AEGON National League season on Sunday, April 3.

Both teams, playing in the South East South Division, began their bids for promotion to the top National Tier with victories.

The men, away to Park Langley, emerged from a deciding shoot-out with a 7-6 victory while the ladies achieved a convincing 10-2 win in their home local derby against Wimbledon.

In the deciders, Marek beat Farhad Tadayon 12-10 and Richard Mayers avenged his earlier straight sets defeat by Francis Sergeant, winning 10-3, to secure victory. Their wins spared Gary and Rob the ordeal of playing a tense final doubles rubber to settle the issue.

New Zealand Earthquake disrupts World Team Champs

Westside head coach Alison Taylor, safely back home in Wimbledon, has graphically described how the New Zealand earthquake struck while she was at the World Team Tennis Championships in Christchurch.
Toronto-born Alison, who captained the Canada ladies over-45 side, was watching a team-mate play when the disaster, which claimed 166 lives, hit the city. She said: "There was a sound like an explosion which lasted for about 20 seconds. "The tennis courts cracked open, water and sludge came up through the ground and the wall of the nearby indoor tennis centre blew out.

"Fortunately, no-one was hurt there apart from one man who suffered a minor hand injury." But the earthquake totally wrecked the Wilding Park Tennis Centre causing the Team Championships to be abandoned along with th following week's ITF Seniors individual championships, although some age group team events being played at other venues around the country continued. Alsion had played just one match, losing to Gretchen Magers, the American former world No 13 women's singles player, the day before the earthquake struck.
The players, who also included former Westsidee men's champion Simon Bramwell, who was part of the Great Britain Over-35 men's squad, were directed to a refuge centre and told not to return to their hotel.
But Alison said: "We only had our tennis kit so we decided to walk back to the hotel, which was on the outskirts of the city, to try and collect our clothes.
"Along the way we saw buildings and vehicles which had been wrecked and roads which had broken up and been flooded when water mains burst.
"But our hotel had not suffered any structural damage and, even though there was no water or electricity, we were able to move back into our rooms."
The experience has not put Alison, who visited other parts of New Zealand before returning home, off playing next year's event in San Diego.
"I'll have to play in the Canadian national championships in Toronto this summer to qualify but I'd like to play it again," she added.

WESTSIDE IN WORLD TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN NEW ZEALAND

Good luck to Alison Taylor and Simon Bramwell who head off to New Zealand this week to play in the World Team Tennis Championships, starting on Monday, February 21.
Simon, the Westside men's singles champion in 2009, has been chosen for the Great Britain Over-35 men's squad which will be competing for the Italia Cup at Wilding Park in Christchurch.
Westside head coach Alison will be playing at the same venue in the women's Over-45 Margaret Court Cup competition - for Canada
Toronto-born Alison was chosen to lead the Canadian team after returning home to win the national title in Vancouver last summer.
"I hadn't played a tournament in Canada since I was a junior so it was great to be asked to captain the team," said Alison who will stay on to play in the individual championships the following week.
